1. Mistletoes come with massive varieties. You can find up to about 1,300 varieties of mistletoes around the world. Dwarf mistletoe has orange or yellow leaves.

2. Of the thousands of mistletoe varieties, about twenty of them are endangered. So remember to check before picking mistletoe for your Christmas party.

3. You might see mistletoe as a beautiful plant, though; it can be poisonous to pets. 

4. The name Mistletoe comes from the Anglo-Saxon words “mist” and “tan” which mean “dung twig” when translated.

5. The tradition of hanging mistletoe inside the house dates back to the time of the Druids. They believed that mistletoe plant would bring them good luck as well as keep evil spirits away. However, Christians in Western Europe didn’t agree with the idea of hanging mistletoearound their homes or the churches. So they tried to ban it altogether.

6. Have you ever wondered why people kiss one another when caught under the mistletoe? Legend has it that the goddess Frigga had a son named Balder who was killed by an arrow made from mistletoe. Her tears of sadness brought Balder to life again, and Frigga then promised that all who passed under the mistletoe should receive a kiss.

7. The song “Blame it on the Mistletoe” tells a story of a couple who meet and strike up a relationship after kissing under the mistletoe.

8. Harper’s Weekly began featuring pictures of couples kissing under the mistletoe during the mid to late 1800’s.

9. While mistletoe is thought to be a romantic plant, it is considered a pest around the world. When mistletoe seeds are carried to trees, they spread around the branches then cause stunt of growth or even death to the tree.

10. Mistletoe is the state flower of Oklahoma
